Smash Planet Photo Shoot

Here are a couple shots from a recent shoot with Jen Fromal and her partners. She will be using these images on here “Smash Planet” blog. Everything was shot a my Canon 40D in Raw. Obviously shot on green screen and the bookshelf file was inserted later. I used FXHome Photokey software to do the green screen removal and add the backdrop. I’ll be posting more images from the shoot as soon as they are ready.

Iphone Wallpapers

So I wasn’t able to get out and shoot this week, so I decide as a little treat I would optimize some of my images to be used as iphone wallpapers. I grabbed 10 images I thought lent themselves nicely to the iphone platform. Please download and tell your friends. All you need to do is click on the image you want, when the larger image opens give it a right click and save it to your iphoto library (on a mac) or your my pictures folder (on a PC). Then sync your iphone. This is really simple to do, If you want to try it with your own pics all you need to do is crop your pics to 320×480 at 180 ppi. ENJOY.

“Sunday Shoot” Textures

This “Sunday Shoot” was not exactly shot on a Sunday. I know it’s called “sunday shoot”, this week life just got in the way of photography. So here it is finally on a Tuesday, my “Sunday Shoot”.

For this weeks post I was thinking TEXTURE. Turns out texture is everywhere, you can’t go two feet with a camera and not find an interesting texture. So I decided when shooting digitally I need to start thinking FILMALLY (i just made that word up). What I mean is, it has become so easy to shoot and shoot and shoot with a digital camera. Remember when we had to buy film in 24 or 36 exposure rolls, maybe you don’t but I do. Those were the good old days, you actually had to be selective in where you were going to spend those shots. So I’m making an effort to limit how many exposures I make. What I have done is taken a small CF card like 512mb or 1gb and set my camera to Raw+Jpeg this gets me around 25-50 exposures and thats it. Once those shots are taken I’m done, I don’t erase in camera or bring another CF card. I find this makes me really take an extra second before I press the shutter release and decide wheather or not it’s worth taking. When shooting this week I actually only took 36 exposures. After reviewing my shots I found 11 that I’d like to share with you. I think if I shot 136 exposures I still might only have 11 to share. Stepping back into the film world is helping me see better pictures before I take them. Quality not quantity.

How to make a Super Contrast image with style in Adobe Photoshop

Working in Photoshop CS3 but this can be done in any version of Photoshop. First Step create two background copies. You can do this by hitting command + J on a mac and ctrl+J on a PC

Now we are going to select the middle layer in this example “background copy” and from the image menu choose adjustments>desaturate. Then select the “background” layer and do the same thing. Now the two bottom layers in your layers pallette should be B&W.

The next two step are very simple select the middle layer and change the blending mode to “screen” and the top layer change the blending mode to “overlay”.

The difference should be pretty obvious. At this point your pretty much done. I like to flatten the image and apply some monochrome noise and sharpening, but that’s optional. Season to flavor.

Sunday Shoot Sepia Tone

I think this will be the first edition on “Sunday Shoots” a new feature on my blog. I’m going to go out and shoot every Sunday or at least try. Then do some post production and get the shots online for your viewing pleasure. Each week I shoot I would like to have some kind of theme in mind so the images have a consistent feel. Today when I decided to go out and shoot I had the idea that all my finished images would be B&W when I started working my post production magic, I felt the images lent themselves more to sepia toning than B&W. So today you get 8 sepia toned images.

All the images were shot on my Canon 40D with a 28-135mm lens with availble light. All the post processing was done in Apple’s Aperture Software. None of the images were cropped. The sepia tone adjustment is as follows; the images were first converted to B&W using Aperture’s “monochrome mixer” with one of the presets such as “blue filter” or “red filter” depending on the image. Then sepia tone effect was applied to every image at a 0.7 intensity. Each picture was adjusted with exposure/contrast/brightness/definition/highlights and shadows accordingly. Please if you have any critque or feedback it would be much appreciated. If anyone has a suggestion on what the next “sunday shoot” theme should be that also would be appreciated.

Photography is hardwork

So I decided to start a photo blog. This Blog will be a place where I can share tips and tutorials, my work and other fun stuff related to the photo world.

I invite you to be a part of this creative process with me sharing creative ideas on photography, making money with photography and critiques.

Remember their is no such thing as a stupid question (comment). I urge all readers to give input on things you would like to be discussed.

So this being my first post let me give you some history about me.

My name is Andrew Quinn. I’m a lover of everything photography. I guess that goes without saying considering I’m getting started on a photo blog. I attended a vocational school while in high school that focused on digital arts and photography. This is what really got me excited about photography, this was my first introduction to wet lab photography (darkroom) and digital photography. I had been making pictures for years before this, but that vocational program is what really sparked my love for photography.

After graduating from high school and my vocational studies I, like most photographers was doubting my ability and work. I decided to get a conventional job with a steady pay check. Of course I continued shooting. I was mostly shooting bands and surfers/skaters. Never anything that paid. After two years of shooting and working the 9 to 5 grind I decided to take a leap and return to school.

This was a big deal for me considering throughout high school I was told that I wasn’t “College Material” by numerous teachers, principals, and guidance counselors. After a while you really start believing people. Turns out they were all wrong. I enrolled to The Art Institute of Philadelphia and graduated on time, a tenth of a point shy of graduating with honors and received the “Outstanding Achievement Award”.

School was great. I loved being immersed in photography 24/7. The biggest thing I took away from my time spent at The Art Institute of Philadelphia is simply this “photography is hard work”. Like a lot of people I assumed taking pictures for a living would be fun and easy. Taking a picture is fun and easy but constructing an amazing photograph is a lot more than just pressing a button.

So it has been two years since graduating from College. I have started my own company www.davidjunephotography.com unfortunately I still work two other jobs to pay my bills. One of those jobs is in the computer industry, which is another love of mine and the other is in photography. My goal is to be strictly working in photography by 2012 whether this doing my own thing or for somebody else either one would be welcomed.
